the Mackie book
created December 2007
private collection

The book as it started life; a child's board book.

Lightly sanded and primed with Kilz2.

The cover. Later I added a large skeleton leaf that I painted black and a gold painted wooden heart.

The 1st spread. Painted dark brown with a gold spray on top. Printed out the Clan MacKay badge on regular paper and gave it a light wash in the same brown as the background mixed with gold paint and water. (clickable)

The 2nd spread; my sister Cindy. She's the girly one in our family. Her birthday is in September so I used dark blue art paper for the background. Butterflies, jewel stickers, pink paper for the puzzle piece. (clickable)

The 3rd spread: me. My first name is Chris and that's what my family calls me. My spread is covered with a Chinese newsprint and multi-colored swirls. The swirls symbolize my tattoo. (I am the only one of us with one) My puzzle piece is covered in art paper of aqua with gold foil. (clickable)

The 4th spread: my brother Paul. Fitting because he is Paul Mackie the 4th. His spread is covered with a scrapbooking paper that seemed fun but not feminine. The blue dots say "let's party"....so my brother. His puzzle piece is covered with ultra-fine sandpaper. (clickable)

The 5th spread. My parents have 2 beach houses on Whidbey Island and they love to fish. This spread was painted with artist acrylics and the lower half is real sand. (clickable)

The 6th spread. My parents also love golf. So the left side is a simple scrapbook paper and scrapbook stickers. The right side is a leaf print scrapbook paper with a vellum quote that says "no cord or cable can draw so forcibly or bind so fast as love can do with a single thread". (clickable)
